If you enjoy taking mini vacations or just need a nice weekend getaway, you might want to consider the Amish Country. The Amish Country is located in Berlin, Walnut Creek and Sugar Creek Ohio. All these locations are within 10-15 minutes from each other, but on horse and buggy I’m sure it’s much longer. Luckily we didn’t have to worry about horse and buggy, but boy is it neat to see these along the roads. The Amish are known for their craftsmanship of furniture, homemade items, food, etc. Also they live without electricity, electronics, motorized equipment to name a few. We may think it’s crazy, but to these people its just their every day lives. And I’m sure they think we are crazy for the way we live.
Our first time in the Amish Country was a total blast. My family and I headed up early Friday morning so we could make sure to see everything that we could, due to stores and restaurants being closed on Sundays. We knew that one day wouldn’t be enough cause there were so many places that we wanted to check out. We made it to Millersburg Ohio about 9:30am. Millersburg was the location of our hotel, which is located 10 minutes from Berlin. Our hotel was located in the heart of the city, a nice quiet location to be exact. The hotel was built back in 1847, I’m in love with old buildings, so this was the perfect place for us to spend a couple nights.
The inside of the hotel was old and still furnished from the 1850’s. I’m sure there have been some upgrades, but for being built back in 1847 it looked really good.
Hotel Millersburg: Amish Country
The outside had a nice cozy feel to it as well. On Friday or Saturday nights that have live bands or little concerts out in the courtyard. While we were there, the weather wasn’t cooperating so they had to cancel the live music for Friday night. As you can tell, we still enjoyed ourselves. It was nice just being able to relax and have a few drinks before we were able to check into our rooms. Since we got there so early, we couldn’t check into our rooms until 3:00pm. That was fine with us though, cause we were able to roam the streets and find a good place to eat.
Courtyard at the Millersburg Hotel: Amish Country
After looking around the courtyard and having a few drinks, we decided to venture out into the quite town. Since we were on Main Street there were a lot of small businesses to shop in. Of course I was looking for all the old Antique stores, and came across quite a few. The one main store that was closed, and yes I was a little pissed about, was the LulaRoe store.. LOL!!! Boy my husband would have never gotten me out if it was open.
The few antique stores that we strolled through were two stories and they had anything and everything. There was even a toy store that had tons of toys in it, I couldn’t believe it. I know Colton was pretty amazed with it as well. Too bad I didn’t get a picture.
Next place we checked out was an Amish wood shop. In here they made their own hammers, guns, handles, axes, etc. The Amish are a little pricey on their items, but when you make it yourselves its always gonna be a little higher in value.
Our stroll through town was really nice and we even ate at a nice pub for lunch. The food was great, but for the life of me I can not think of the name of it. I’m sure it will come to me soon. We proceeded back down to the courtyard to enjoy the rest of the evening after we checked in. Our rooms and the hotel was said to have been haunted, but we never had any encounters. LOL!
Day 2 in the Amish Country:
Day 2 started out going to Berlin, this is where most of the Amish shops are located. Seems like everywhere you look there is an antique shop of some kind. Probably the best part of the day was going to the grocery stores and seeing all the homemade food. I’m telling you what, we were in heaven. When you walk in and see all the fresh cheese, beef sticks, sauces, you just want to buy the whole store. Walnut Creek is the first store we stopped at. It’s a little grocery store that has all kinds of Amish grown food, a little pricey, but very good. This was also the first time we seen the buggy’s pulled up outside the store.
Other than antique stores, there are also tons of Primitive Stores. Honestly there were probably more of them then any other type of store, and this girl loves them.
I bought an old orange fold up chair for $4, this went perfectly with my home decor. Also ended up getting a WV necklace and a Ariat ball cap. Colton and Justin got cowboy hats!!
My all time favorite place that we went to was the Cheese Shop. All the cheese you want was in this store and we were able to taste test them all as well. Justin and I ended up spending $101 on cheese, beef sticks, sauces, and more spices. I’m a huge cheese fan and was in total heaven! We can not wait to go back, Justin and I plan to go back by ourselves in October.
If you have never been, I honestly do recommend going to the Amish Country. Especially if your into homemade food, antiques, and primitive items. We had such a great time and will definitely be going back real soon. When we return, Justin and I will be staying in Sugar Creek. This is another location just south of Walnut Creek and Berlin that has Amish stores as well. Is it October yet? lol
Til next time,
