Why is it that family vacations can be so stressful at times? Is it worrying about all the money being spent? What everyone is going to do for a whole week? Yep I think the answer to all three of these questions are, Yes! When my family decided to take a camping trip for vacation, there were no worries at all. We wouldn’t be spending money on a hotel room, gas to travel far away, just money for food.

The Wonders of Camping for Vacations

Back in June we went on our first ever week long camping trip. We have camped before but its usually just 3 to 4 days max. This year we splurged and went for 8 days. I was a little skeptical about going that long at first, but we ended up having a great time. Yes by the time Sunday came around, I was ready to go home to my bed and shower. When your sleeping in a tent, showering in a bath house and cooking food on a flat top grill for a week, your very ready to go home by the end of the trip.

This past April we joined a club that is approximately 25 minutes away from where we live, Poca River Hunting and Fishing Club.ย  It’s a really nice place to ride, fish, swim and just plain relax.ย  They have several ponds to fish in, five to be exact. Plus you can walk down to the Poca River and fish off the side of the bank or a dock that they have. The pool is super nice, which I only got to spend one day in, due to the weather being too chilly when we went. The camp site we had set up was pretty nice as well. Justin and I have an eight man tent, so we have to have a large spot to set it up at and a lot of shade. I don’t deal to well with hot weather, gives me real bad headaches. So I have to try and stay as cool as possible.

Monday ended up being a wet, rainy day. We either stayed in the tent or out under the canopy that we had set up over the picnic table. It started storming on us that morning around 5:00a or so and didn’t quit til about 5:00p that evening. Just luckily that was the only day it rained.

During the week we either rode four wheelers or relaxed at our camping site. When you can sit and not have a care in the world about anything, then that’s a good vacation. As you can tell from my other blogs I’m a big fan of food. My hubby either smoked food on his smoker or we fixed food on the flat top grill. I made a menu for that week which consisted of, chicken tacos, smoked sausage and potatoes, boneless pork ribs, hot dogs, steaks and a few other small meals. We even got up a few mornings that week and fixed breakfast. Don’t let camping in a tent stop you from cooking just hot dogs and hamburgers. lol

This little fellow came by to visit us quite often:

He had to stop by for a few drinks with us.. LOL!
He found the leftover steak from the night before. ๐Ÿ™‚

Our dogs enjoyed the week as well:

I really enjoy tent camping, but the hubby is ready to acquire a camper next year. This way we are not always loading and unloading the tent, grills, blankets, you name it, every time we go to camp. Yes I agree that it’s a pain in the butt to drag all the stuff around, but camping to me is so much better when your roughing it. lolย ย ย  But I’m sure once I get the feel of being in a camper, I’ll change my mind.ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

After having a week of awesome weather, stayed in the 70’s, by Saturday it was finally warm enough for me to hang out by the pool while everyone else went for a day ride. Justin had invited a few people out to ride for the day, so as they roasted in the hot sun, I relaxed poolside, by myself!

When Sunday morning rolled around, this girl was ready to head home. Yes we had a great time, but nothing beats going home after vacation. Its just nice that we are less than 30 minutes away, instead of 2-6hrs. I’m sure we will make it back down to the beach one of these years, but for now, our vacations will be heading to camp for a long relaxing week. When you don’t want to spend thousands of dollars, but want all the relaxation, just pitch a tent and enjoy the outdoors.

Vacations spent with family are supposed to be fun no matter where you are or what your doing. So enjoy each other and have the time of your life!

Til next time,
Trish

  • Yes!! Cheers to fellow camping lovers! We LOVE camping so much we bought a small travel trailer and are currently planning to give full-time camper life a try! It’s definitely a great way to get away without feeling like you are break ing the bank. Plus you get to enjoy the beauty of nature rather while you explore a new place!

  • Camping is one of my favorite things to do of all time. It doesn’t matter to me if we are roughin’ it backpacking through the mountains and sleeping in a tent we can’t even sit up straight in, or laid back in luxury in a big RV. I love it all.

  • I love this!! I go Glamping with my girlfriends annually (I’m 45-esque!) and not a camper! Lol What great memories you area creating for your family!!

  • This sounds like such a wonderful vacation and location! 5 ponds for fishing, and incredible week of meals, and temps in the 70s? Can you get much better than that? (I’m sitting in 90+ degree heat longing for 70 ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) My husband and I are tent campers as well – but I can certainly see the appeal of the camper ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Sounds like so much fun! I agree with you, too… It’s not real camping if it’s not in a tent ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I’ve also never been camping in a camper haha. I wish I could go camping for vacation this summer, but it gets WAY too hot here in Texas!
